Adaptation
Down the road of Main Street, darkness surrounded as the driver sped up their cars to go home after a long working day. As the green light turned red, a loud screeching sound and a big thump noise followed. A body, still and not moving, laid in front of an old working truck.
“Oh my God. What should I do? I will be sued for this”. Thinking about what can happen to him, the driver jumped on his car and drove away. As the shadow of the truck slowly disappears, the dead body cracked its bones one by one, stood up and started walking towards the dimmed light.
The next day.
Slowly pulling in his car, Seok-Woo turned to his daughter:
“Hey, you are here. Pack your bags and let’s go.”
Soo-An turned to him, holding tight her teddy bear: “Why can’t I stay with you, I hate being alone.”
Seok-Woo: “You know that I can’t properly take care of you, I have too much work. If you stay at the dorm, you will get the proper care. 3 meals a day and you will have friends. And I will see you every 2 days.”
Soo-An: “Promise?”
Seok-Woo: “Promise.”
Hesitantly opening the door, Soo-An looked at Stasio Hall with a nervous look on her face.
“This is where I live now,” thinking in her head. She still can’t believe that her father would push her into a dormitory. When her mother left, she thought that her dad would be able to take care of her. It turned out her decision was wrong. After all, she was always by herself.
Seok-Woo drives himself to his empty home, knowing that he should have taken better care of Soo-An, but he knows that he has always been failing as a father. His wife was so good at it, parenting, but his own greed of making money has separated them apart. While doing his usual routine at home, he thinks about what he should get for Soo-An upcoming birthday. As if he is getting too tired of thinking about that, he instantly picks up his phone and tells his secretary to buy Soo-An’s presents for him.
While he was deep in his sleep, a loud thud noise woke him up. Then, he started to smell smoke and heard louder noises coming outside from his windows.
There were bodies running after people in the crowd, Seok-Woo could hear the screams and smell the blood from his place. He witnesses the gruesome scene of bodies biting and eating flesh from horrified running people.
He grabbed his car keys and drive straight to Thornton Academy, thinking about his daughter’s safety made him sped up. On the way, Seok-Woo saw houses on fire, people started to turn into something else. Their eyes were white with no sense of feelings and emotions as if they are not human anymore. He knew that he had to run away from them.
Seok-Woo entered the school, at that moment, he saw his daughter standing there with a shocked look on her face. Instantly, he stopped and jumped out of the car, hugged her and pulled her inside of the dorms.
“Are you alright? Are you hurt? I’m scared to death right now.”
No words can describe her fear right now. She stood there hugging him as tight as she could. They turned around and saw different groups of people inside Stasio Hall. Family members tried to calm each other, international students held their phone tightly with the hope of reaching their parents.
“Hey, hey, okay. There’s a chair, you can sit right here. Just relax, we are fine now.”
Seok-Woo turned to where the voices came from and saw a man and a pregnant woman.
“Hey, are you guys okay? If you need any help, I could..”
“No, it’s fine. We are good. Thank you.” Sang-Hwa looked at Seok-Woo with an annoyed look.
“I'm okay. I'm pregnant but still I can sit down by myself. By the way, he just offered his help. Thank you but we don’t need any help.” Sung-Kyung looked at Sang-Hwa then Seok-Woo.
“My husband is grumpy sometimes. He worried because I’m pregnant, and with what is happening, he is troubled more than ever.”
“It’s okay. This is my daughter, Soo-An.” Seok-Woo put his arms around her and they introduced.
“Do you know what is going on right now, is it a disease or some sort?” Seok-Woo confusedly asked.
“I don’t know. I just knew that if that thing bites one of us, we are done. We will be like them, running around and eating flesh.” A man turned to them and answered the question.
With his neat suit and combed hair, Yon-Suk looked at Seok-Woo and Sang-Hwa with a disgusted look.
Right then, the news popped on the large TV screen.
“Good morning, this is the Maine Central News. With our sources, we have confirmed that the situation we are having right now is critical. Please stay in your house and remain calm. Prepare yourselves with any weapon that you can find.”
"This is ridiculous, why is there no one come to help us?", an old lady says.
"No, I think it's safer for us to stay here. The door is locked, they couldn't get in.", another man answers.
“You guys just came in right? Are you bitten? Why is there blood on your shirt? People, these people might be bitten. Let’s get them out.” Yon-Suk nervously looked at Seok-Woo and Sang-Hwa.
Seok-Woo looked at his shirt and realized that the blood must have splashed on when he was driving.
“Who do you think you are that you can push us out?! This is not right.” Seok-Woo stared straight at Yon-Suk.
Yon-Suk: “I know what I’m seeing, and all the other people here can see it too. I’m the board director of this school, of course, I know things that you don’t. For the safety of these people, you should leave.”
A crowd of people started to yell at them, pushing them towards the door of Stasio Hall, without realizing that they are pushing people to possibly, death.
Seok-Woo: “What should we do now?”
Soo-An: “Dad, I know the way around this school. We can go to the Main Building. There are a lot of communicating devices there, we can reach out to the police.”
If Seok-Woo's phone didn't drop when he drove to Thornton Academy, and if Sang-Hwa would have had used his phone if he was not worried for wife's safety during maternity, they wouldn't have to go all this way.
Seok-Woo: “You sure?”
Soo-An: “Yes, I’m sure.”
Sang-Hwa: “Ok kid. We will trust you. I would rather be with you people than in there with those heartless people.”
While they ran to Seok-Woo’s car, zombies barged in Stasio Hall through the 2nd floor windows on a stack of bodies. Yon-Suk and other people couldn't get out as the zombies were blocking all the exit doors. Soo-An turned her head in the car and saw a bloodbath. People were screaming and running for their lives as zombies chased them down.
Seok-Woo: "We are here, let's go."
Sung-Kyung held Soo-An's hands as they walked up the stairs while Sang-Hwa and Seok-Woo looked after them.
As Sung-Kyung opened the door, the door was pushed from the inside. it was then she saw a man in the police officer uniform.
"Holy, what are you guys doing in here? Get in here. It's so dangerous outside."
As 4 of them walked inside the Main Building, the police officer closed an locked the door with a bite mark hidden under his long sleeve.
